How to maintain a positive attitude when facing a crisis
German partner’s Lessons from the crisis

The project "Manage the COVID crisis with Care, reasOn, Values, unIty, soliDarity" is a response to the global crisis that was caused by the Corona pandemic and seemingly brought the world to a standstill. As part of the project, a philosophical panel discussion on the topic of "attitude and how to maintain a positive attitude when facing a crisis" took place on April 22 from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. in Dresden's cultural project space null7b. The discussion was led by philosopher Doreen Siegmund together with theater pedagogue and DJ Samuel Fink. Both are part of the Dresden cultural collective pampelmusewww.pampelundmuse.deand are closely connected to the German partner in the project – Jugend- & Kulturprojekt e.V.https://www.jkpev.de/de/as well as to the project space null7b. The JKPeV team was responsible for admission, light and sound technology, which ensured that the debate ran smoothly throughout the evening.
The event was promoted via the JKPeV websitehttps://www.jkpev.de/de/2022/04/08/haltung-philosophische-podiumsdiskussion/and through the website of pampelmusehttps://www.pampelundmuse.de/veranstaltungen), as well as via the online forum of the project space null7bhttps://forum.nullsieben.be/), and also via the social media channels of the JKPeV (https://fb.me/e/32cCo709X). In addition, the JKPeV implemented a print campaign consisting of custom-designed flyers for the event.
During the event, after a short welcome by the two hosts, the COVID project and the context of the debate 'LESSONS FROM THE CRISIS' were introduced with a short presentation. Afterwards the topic 'attitude' was explained philosophically. Especially the contrast between an attitude and a mere opinion played a major role.

Led by Doreen Siegmund, the discussion focused on what constitutes a true attitude, our inner compass, so to speak, and how this gives us stability in unsteady times. The participants also talked about how a stabile body posture can support us in our inner posture. Therefore, the theater pedagogue Samuel Fink practiced the so-called theater pose with all the guests: a fixed posture that nevertheless allows us to react flexibly to any situation. The audience remained in this pose for 5 minutes and took several deep breaths. Then the philosophical debate continued. The discussion focused on Stoic philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius, but also on German authors such as Günther Krass or Wolfgang Herrndorf and how they dealt with difficult times. After the philosophical analysis, it could be summarized that a true attitude is ethical, constantly lived, resilient, reflective, knowledge-based and stylistic.
After a short musical break, an open dialogue session followed on the questions: what attitude people had towards the pandemic at the beginning and what attitude they have now, and how each individual helped themselves or others during the pandemic.
Participants were very active in the roundtable and shared personal stories about their time during the Corona pandemic, what helped them through this difficult time, and what they would like to see in the future. During the debate, JKPeV was able to collect several STORIES OF GOODNESS from Inga Römer (Consultant for Nature Preservation Policy at the German Bundestag), Sascha Möckel (Chairman of the Men's Network Dresden e.V.), Albrecht Schumann (Musician and School Teacher), Mia-Ann Böhm (Art Student), Richard Gruhle (DJ and Member of the Board of the Dresden Cultural Association null7b) and Prof. Dr. Susan Garthus-Niegel - Professor of Epidemiology and Women's & Family Health.
